British Glass welcomes Government’s CBAM announcement

British Glass has welcomed the UK Government’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) announcement.

Commenting Federation manager, Paul Pearcy said: "British Glass welcomes the UK Government’s decision to align the sectoral scope of the 2027 UK CBAM with the EU’s CBAM announced during the Autumn Budget. This will allow the industry to properly prepare for any inclusion of glass at a later stage.

"As the government moves forward with its implementation plans, British Glass looks forward to collaborating with the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UKETS) Authority and Her Majesty’s Treasury (HMT) to explore effective carbon leakage mitigation measures. These measures will be crucial in ensuring that British glass manufacturers remain competitive in a global market, while also driving the sector towards a more sustainable and low-carbon future."

A UK CBAM will be introduced from the start of 2027 for some energy-intensive imports including: aluminium, cement, fertiliser, hydrogen, and iron and steel. Products from the glass and ceramics sectors are currently not planned to be included, but the scope will be reviewed.
