A brief historical introduction is followed by detailed descriptions of a number of refractory and metallic
remunerators at present available. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are discussed briejy. It is shown that the latest designs of metallic remunerators allow operation at temperatures approaching the normal maximum obtainable with refractory remunerators and that despite higher capital costs they are generally worth while owing to the greater flexibility of operation and instrumentation.
