A general review of heat recovery in furnaces
GT V02 1961 110-113
The results of a questionnaire circulated by the British Glass Industry Research Association to all its glass melting members are summarized. Following the questionnaire attempts were made to determine the life of grey cast-iron moulds used for different parts of the forming process and to analyse the causes of failure. The results suggest that, apart from purely metallurgical factors, a very substantial portion of the failures are due to mechanical damage, for which only the glass industry itself can be held responsible. The differing attributes which can be associated with the term 'grey cast-iron' are often not acknowledged in ordering equipment made from this material and this aspect seemed to offer possibilities for research. Practical field trials were organized using grey cast iron blow moulds, all made of the same material but with different heat treatments. The trials were carried out on the same type of machine in two works with a total of four cavities of each treatment being tested.
