The corrosion of zircon refractories by molten glasses Part 2. The effect of the concentration of zirconium silicate dissolved in a calcium alumino-borosilicate glass and in a soda-lime silicate slieet glass on the relative rate of corrosion of zircon refractories in these glasses
GT V2 1961227-234
Zircon refractories have been found to become less rapidly corroded in a calcium alumino-borosilicate glass and in a soda-lime silicate sheet glass as the concentration of zirconium silicate dissolved in these glasses was increased. As saturation was approached, the zircon refractory showed no significant wear in standard corrosion tests in these glasses at 1450" C. The factor which controlled the rate of solution of zircon under standard test conditions appeared to be the degree of unsaturation of the glasses with respect to zirconium silicate. The practical importance of the protection afforded to zircon refractories by a contiguous layer of glass saturated or enriched with zirconium silicate is discussed.
